Transformers: Dark of the Moon McDonald’s Toys (Bumblebee and Optimus Prime)
This set of McDonald’s toys was exclusive to Japan.
Bumblebee (Non-Transforming)
Bumblebee comes with a remote control to activate a light in his chest. It’s not the best figure, but I’ve seen worse. Paint apps are decent enough for a McDonald’s toy.
Bumblebee (Transforming)
Way back during Revenge of the Fallen, Hasbro released a series of toys called Gravity Bots. They had die-cast metal parts to give them enough weight to operate. Essentially, when they are on their wheels, they are in vehicle mode, and when you tipped them up on the back of the their car mode, they automatically transformed. The top of their vehicle mode would turn 180 degrees causing their arms to pull out and down automatically transforming into robot mode. They were kind of a design precursor to Rescue Bots Flip Racers. Bumblebee uses the same general design, but he is all plastic and thus does not have enough weight to transform automatically. He is also slightly simplified. The Gravity Bots had a flap on the back of the car mode that flipped over when transformed to make the chest of the robot. Bumblebee just has the chest where his back window should be. He came with a sticker sheet. While not a great toy by any means, the stickers do make him look okay.
Optimus Prime (Non-Transforming)
Optimus Prime has a light in his chest that is motion activated. He’s really well painted and has a lot of molded detail. Certainly better than the average fast food toy.
Optimus Prime (Transforming)
Like Bumblebee, Optimus Prime is designed like a Gravity Bot. He really looks great in vehicle mode with the stickers. Robot mode is okay.
Overall: These are some cool toys, and I’ve been looking for them for a long time. I feel like I overpaid a little at $60, but given that they are twelve years old and from Japan, that’s probably not a bad price.
