Transformers Mattel Hot Wheels Transforming Optimus Prime

Hasbro licensed Mattel to make Hot Wheels cars of Transformers characters. The G1 Bumblebee and Optimus Prime were cool. I really like the look the upcoming Ultra Magnus. They did a series with Transformers 2018 art on the cards and Movie vehicles that don’t even have the character names on the cards and one of which is a modified VW Bug that doesn’t have anything to do with Transformers since it’s modified that they included. Overall just kind of eh. Then the big announcement came of a transforming Hot Wheels Optimus Prime and I confess myself disappointed. Let’s start with the packaging.

The packaging is clever, I’ll give them that. He comes in vehicle mode on an unsealed card, it’s really just for displaying in the box, but you can take the tray out if you want. However, it also includes a separate bubble that you can use to put him on the card in robot mode. It’s been a while since I got this, but I think the card back is two sided, I don’t think they were separate.

Vehicle Mode: In vehicle mode he is a perfect G1 Optimus Prime toy. The metallic paint and chrome looks great.

Robot Mode: Again, he’s a perfect G1 Optimus Prime. He’s actually a little too perfect, as he can’t really hold his gun very well as the handle is in the way of his arm. They could have altered his gun so he could hold it better.

Overall: This is a cool toy. It’s not incredible or anything, but cool if they price has been $25-$40. Unfortunately, they charged an unimaginably high $80 for this toy. That is insane. Ultimately, they only reason I can give not to buy this tot is the ridiculous price tag.
