Transformers: Platinum Edition Planet of Junk Clash (Hot Rod, Scrapheap, Wreck-Gar)

As it happens, I have never done full reviews of these molds, so this is as good an opportunity as any.

Hot Rod

Vehicle Mode: The first version of this mold was released in late 2006 as part of the Classics line, which Hasbro created as something to put on the shelves in the year leading up to the first Transformers movie.  One might think that Hasbro realized at that point that what we wanted was new toys of the characters we love, but it took them a while, and they still forget.  This is a fantastic toy.  It’s a perfect G1 Hot Rod.  It’s really nitpicky, but the flame missile and launcher does nothing for it, I really wish he had two silver guns like the G1.  Also, chrome piping on his sides would be cool, but really, the toy is awesome as is.

Robot Mode: Hot Rod has a great head sculpt, and this version has a great paintjob, but I think I prefer the original version.  This one still looks great though.

Scrapheap & Wreck-Gar

Vehicle Mode: Wreck-Gar was originally released as part of the Transformers 2010 line.  I never liked this mold.  It’s pain to transform.  Both ways.  I hate the two different legs.  It’s not an awful toy, but it’s never done anything for me.

Robot Mode:  This is the first USA retail release for the Scrapheap head mold that was originally seen in the Japanese Transformers United Autobot 2-Pack and later used for the Botcon 2012 Shattered Glass Junkions.

Overall: At $75 for three deluxe toys, this set is really overpriced.  It also doesn’t make a lot of sense.  They are doing five overpriced Platinum sets to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Transformers: The Movie.  The upcoming Autobot Heroes 5-Pack should have been named the Planet of Junk Clash and included Wreck-Gar instead of Kup.  Kup should have been put in a set with Hot Rod and Generations Voyager Grimlock as a battle on Quintessa themed set.  In any case, as an homage to the G1 movie, while imperfect, it works well enough.
